Welcome to Apple Valley High School Air Force JROTC

Most students come in to this program with their own idea of what AFJROTC is going to be, but in most cases they are surprised by what they find.  We’ve developed a program that accomplishes our academic goals and promotes teamwork while having a good time.
 
CA-20012 AFJROTC Group was established in 2001 by an agreement between Apple Valley Unified School District and the United States Air Force.  Our curriculum is a mix of Leadership Education, Aerospace Science, and Physical Fitness Training, most of which comes directly from the U.S. Air Force, Air University.  It also provides training and certification of the units instructor Master Sergeant Nick Aguilera.
 
MSgt Aguilera is a 1984 graduate of AVHS who entered active duty with the U.S. Air Force shortly after graduation.  He spent 20 years on active duty, retiring in September of 2004.  He came back to AVHS as an AFJROTC instructor in July of 2005.  His Air Force career includes experience in Aircraft Maintenance and Recruiting.
 
The AFJROTC mission is “to build better citizens”.  We accomplish this mission through education, training, community service, and team building activities.  The Cadet Group is managed and operated by cadets (students).  Cadets will be part of a chain of command similar to an actual military organization and each cadet is given the opportunity to pursue a leadership role within the unit.  It is through the cadet organization that cadets learn leadership skills and to direct activities.

Prior to your wrestler practicing with the team, they MUST complete a sports packet and physical. These packets can be obtained in the ASB office and once they are complete (including the physical), they must be returned to ASB. ASB will then clear them for participation and give them a clearance card which they must turn in to the coaching staff before they can practice. Local doctors such as Dr. Twogood, Dr. Stein, and Dr. Mike’s offices will complete the physicals for a small fee.

We do not hold tryouts. Each athlete that comes out for the team will get the opportunity to wrestle in competition. To get our wrestlers ready for the season we have started a pre-season conditioning practice. Practice will be on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:00 to 4:00. This will run from now until October. In October, we will go to daily practices during the same hours. In November the daily practices will increase to 3 hours and end at 5:00.

The season officially begins, the first week of December and runs through February. During the season, if your wrestler is part of the Varsity team or the Junior Varsity “A” team, you can expect your wrestler to be competing in tournaments each weekend and League dual matches each week. All other wrestlers will compete at Junior Varsity tournaments as the JV “B” team. We make every effort to ensure that each wrestler is given the opportunity to wrestle competitively. Wrestling season runs through the holidays. This means we will continue to have practices and go to tournaments during the break.

There will be a MANDATORY parents meeting at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 7 in room E-9. We will be discussing the upcoming season, fundraising, transportation, requirements for wrestle-offs, and volunteer opportunities.
