Welcome 2018/2019 Principal Letter
Dear Sundevil Families,
We are now just days away from starting the 2018-2019 school year! I want to welcome everyone to what will be the best year in our school’s history. In typical Sundevil style, we will continue to uphold our traditions, produce quality graduates, and BLEED ORANGE as we walk the halls! As each of you enters our campus remember that we set out to support each of you in becoming academic achievers, valuable community participants, and skillful thinkers and communicators.
This year I will continue my student lunch sessions on Fridays during normal lunch time. I will continue to have the weekly sign-up sheet outside my office. Students, this is an open invite and has proven to be very valuable to our campus. Your voice is needed and powerful as we continue to support programs, create new programs, and ultimately make plans for your experience and education during your high school years. If any of you ever want to join me and share your comments or concerns please do not hesitate to sign up and show up!
On a similar note we will be launching a Student Advisory Committee that will meet with me every other week during this school year. The students chosen for this committee will represent many aspects of our student body. This committee can serve as your voice in my ears if you are unable to attend any of my student lunch sessions mentioned above or are unable to connect with me throughout your day. The team will have representatives from every grade level, many programs, athletics, as well as students from a variety of academic and social backgrounds. I truly anticipate the student lunches and this Student Advisory Committee as being my personal highlight to the school year as well as an extremely powerful influence on student life!
Speaking of student input, one message I heard loud and clear over this last school year, from students during our Friday lunch time, was a desire to integrate and bring together students from all backgrounds. They really spoke to the Kin goal of our SPARK culture. This will guide the theme I will present to our staff upon our return in August. I am not sure if I will use a “No One”, “Know One”, or maybe a circle/slash over the number 1 as a reminder for all that we do not work/learn in isolation. Let’s all enter this year looking to make friends, develop appropriate relationships, and be welcoming to all that call AVHS their school. I look forward to this movement and thank the students for bringing this desire to my attention.
Please take time to read through the attached packet. This along with avhs.net should answer many questions you have as we enter our school year. Finally, I look forward to serving you and your family as principal of Apple Valley High School. I am honored to hold this position and hold this calling in the highest regard.
Note: The first day of school Wednesday, August 8, 2018 is NOT an early release day and we will be following the M,T,Th,F schedule.
